What is the intercooler?

1. The role of the intercooler

for a supercharged engine, the intercooler is an integral part of the supercharging system. Whether the engine is supercharged or turbocharged engines, are required to install intercooler between the supercharger and the intake manifold of the engine, since the radiator is located between the engine and the supercharger, it is also referred to as intermediate cooling device, referred to as an intercooler.

Why turbocharged engine will have more power than ordinary engine, wherein one of the reasons that the ventilation efficiency is higher than naturally aspirated engines in general . As the air enters the turbocharger its temperature would rise sharply, the corresponding density becomes high, and the intercooler functions as the cooling air is, high temperature air is cooled through the intercooler, and then into the engine. If you let the hot air directly into the supercharged engine, the air temperature is too high because it will result in engine damage or even death of the phenomenon of the lack of fire in the cold.

Since the temperature of exhaust gas discharged from the engine is very high, the heat conduction through the booster will increase the temperature of the intake air. Also, the air density increases during the compression process, which will inevitably lead to increase in temperature of air, thus affecting the charging efficiency of the engine. If you want to further improve volumetric efficiency, we must reduce the intake air temperature. Data show that the air-fuel ratio under the same conditions, the charge air temperature drops every 10 ℃, engine power can be increased by 3 to 5 percentage percentage.

If the uncooled charge air enters the combustion chamber, in addition to affect the charging efficiency of the engine, the engine very easily lead to excessive combustion temperatures, resulting in detonation failure, and increases in engine exhaust gases NOx content, causing air pollution. In order to address the adverse effects of temperature increase caused by pressurized air, thus requiring the installation of an intercooler to reduce the intake air temperature.
