What is stroke (mm)?

stroke (Stroke) is what we usually refer to the stroke.

refers to the distance between the stroke of the engine piston travels from the top dead center to the bottom dead center. This parameter has a crucial importance for engine performance orientation. Here we look at, what does that mean for stroke engines.

“piston stroke vividly illustrates the range of motion of the piston in the cylinder.”

stroke: the decision engine speed characteristic of the key element

in certain circumstances engine displacement, the engine may have two design: a small stroke large bore and small bore large stroke. A small stroke means the stroke of the piston is relatively small, which means more reps means that the piston easier time running back and forth in a unit that is easier to reach a relatively high speed. The large stroke means that the piston stroke is relatively large, which means that the piston has a longer acceleration distance, that is easier for a relatively high output torque. Also a small stroke engine block determines the height will be relatively small, and therefore a lower center of gravity; conversely, a large stroke of the engine determines the center of gravity will be higher. Both comparison, we can summarize their respective characteristics are as follows:

advantage

[123 ] disadvantage

a small stroke

easy to obtain high speed, low center of gravity

the low speed torque

large stroke

easier to obtain low speed high torque output

high center of gravity, easy to achieve high speed

to illustrate the effect of the stroke of the engine, we find several of the same displacement as part of the 1.6-liter engine parameters common family cars, from which we come to know the significance of stroke engine lies.

we can see from the table above, the engine came in three cars the same amount, the larger the stroke of the engine, the output torque of the maximum speed is also lower; contrary, a smaller stroke of the engine, the maximum torque output of the rotation speed is higher. We can clearly see from this, the influence to the travel of the torque output characteristic of the engine.

“Honda R & D F1 engine displacement 2.4 V8 layout, a maximum speed of 18,000 rpm.”

In the final, we You can see a real-life example of extreme piston travel: F1 racing engine. F1 cars are currently using 2.4 liters of displacement V8 engine, piston stroke less than 40 mm, and the maximum speed can reach 18,000 rpm widespread. By contrast, a displacement Accord 2.4, but the piston stroke of 99 mm, the maximum speed of only 6500 rpm. This makes possible a good illustration of the impact of the piston stroke of the engine characteristics.
